So I’m off to the land down under this Sunday! I’m very excited to see my best friend who I haven’t seen (bar endless hours of facetime….) in TWO YEARS! I think I’m going to have an emotional breakdown when I see her at the airport on the other side of the 22 hour flight!

I’ll be there for a few weeks and will be heading up the east coast for sun, sand and sailing! I can’t wait!

Today I’m stocking up my kindle and wanted some recommendations – so here’s what I fancy at the moment:..

My preference is YA but if there’s something you really can’t help but tell people about I’d love to hear your suggestion!

I love a good adventure but am maybe fancying a touch of romance too at the moment so either would be great (or a book with both would be even better!)

I’m leaning a little towards fantasy but my eye has been caught by the odd sci fi/dystopia at the moment.

I’m potentially interested in reading the following so a recommendation/warning on any of these would be great:

  1. Uglies is a really good book! It has amazing world building and the author really ties everything together at the end.

The Selection is definitely not an adventure and the romance can be cheezy at times, but it was a good read. Not nearly as dystopian as other books.

Oh! And a good dystopian, adventure, romance with a strong character and realistic character growth that I just finished reading is ‘Gambit’ by C. L. Denault. It is amazing! I give it 5 stars!

  2. Definitely Shadow & Bone Or Daughter of Smoke and Bone! Both are really good fantasy novels 😀 Snow Like Ashes is also a good book, and An Ember in the Ashes. Maybe having the word “Bone” or “Ashes” in the title is a good omen, lol. Enjoy Australia! 🙂

  3. The Selection Series is a nice light read, when you’re looking for something less intense, and I enjoyed the romance, even though it’s a little drawn out. If you’re interested in something lesser known, Unsettled is an indie book that just happens to meet your criteria…I mean, I only know because I wrote it 😉
Here’s a link though, if you’re interested. Happy vacation! Enjoy your reading 🙂

  4. The Selection is a good read, but you’ll have to be prepared to read the whole series if you start, because there is no going back.
One of my absolute favorite fantasy books is Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones. It’s wonderful, and filled with strange magic.

      1. Yes, I have. I love both of them, but I think I like the book more if I had to pick between the two.

  5. Hi Caroline, I’ll shamelessly poke my own YA novel. It’s called Hayden’s War. I write fantasy and sci-fi under the name David Nash to honor my wife who passed away. It seems like something that you would enjoy and it’s a bit of a “beach read”. Lots of small chapters so you can be flexible in reading it. Be interested in your feedback, especially as I’m starting the sequel for Nanowrimo on Nov. 1sy. Have a great day.

  6. Oh my goodness, Shadow and Bone is amazing. I loved it. I couldn’t read it fast enough. I’ve started Trylle, but haven’t been too impressed so far, about 80 pages in. Hopefully it gets more interesting in the future.
    Have a good holiday!

  7. Uglies is a great read, I’d definitely recommend that. I’d also recommend “Throne of Glass” by Sarah J. Maas, “City of Bones” by Cassandra Clare, and “The Young Elites” by Marie Lu. Just a warning: “Throne of Glass” is the first book of the “Throne of Glass” series, but there seem to be a greater variety of opinions (positive and negative) on this book then on the later books (mostly positive.) Happy reading! 🙂

    1. Thanks you! Yes I think I’m gonna have to get uglies now! I’ve read city of bones and I’m halfway through throne of glass but I’ve got them on paperback so can’t take them with me sadly!
      Thanks for the recommendation 🙂
