“Want the truth? This book was a complete surprise. I’ve never had great times with vampire novels, but I’ve got to admit with a pinch of smugness that V Games is the vampire novel I didn’t know I needed until I started reading it.” – Top 3 Best Reviewer on Goodreads
Think The Hunger Games, The Testing, and Vampire Academy…but BETTER. You read that correctly! This book surpasses some of my favorite books of all time! Color me very, very pleasantly surprised!” – Goodreads Reviewer

Being a killer wasn’t what eighteen year old Selena Grey ever expected she’d become. But with her stepfather’s blood fresh on her hands, she finds herself walking into an eight by six prison cell where she’ll live out the next twenty five years of her life.

Or so she thought…

When a man as beautiful as he is terrifying walks into the prison, Selena is the only one seemingly unaffected by his charms. But Varick’s impossibly dark eyes are trained on her and her alone, frightening Selena of what his presence forewarns. It’s not long before she finds out as she wakes on a ship in the dead of night, a captive of the forbidding Varick who seems more beast than man.

But when she arrives at a barren and isolated island in the stormy north sea, she soon realises that the obnoxious Varick may be her only hope of survival. Because, in a place where polar night reigns for the next six months, a powerful and cruel family are about to start this year’s season of the V Games. And Selena is marked to participate in the blood sport, hunted by ravenous vampires and surviving the harsh terrain of the bleak island. And, not only that, but Selena just became the highest bid on contestant in a century…

Eight Steps to self-publishing

6 months into self-publishing with Amazon KDP and I’ve learnt some things along the way that I think everyone going down the indie author route needs to do to start their journey.

  1. Perfect your Novel (novella/short story/ anthology etc. etc.)

This may be a no-brainer to some but I know the feeling of wanting to jump the gun and get that e-book out as fast as humanly possible! But you want to sell quality right? Or you’re not going to make lifelong fans who buy your subsequent works. So make sure you get an editor, proof-reader and bribe as many of your friends and family to read it too! If you’ve read your novel a hundred times I can guarentee you’ll still have missing words etc. because our minds have a very annoying habit of autocorrecting mistakes…

2. Get appropriate Cover Art

If you’re handy with photoshop you may be good enough to create your own cover art like I do. But if not it’s definitely worth hiring a cover artist who can make something professional for you.

Before you go off making the prettiest cover ever, have a look at covers in your genre. It may seem like a good idea to make a cover that’s different to what’s on the market but the best way is to have a cover that is similar enough to those in the same genre that anyone who comes across your book will know what to expect from it.

3. Formatting your ebook

If you’re going the Amazon route to start your book off then here’s a simple guide on the Amazon KDP website to get your ebook in shape:

If you’re going wide with your ebook then different platforms may require different formatting. To make this step easier I suggest publishing with Smashwords who will distribute your book to Kobo, Barnes and Noble, ibooks and Overdrive without all the hassle of doing it individually (yeah -I’m lazy like that but hey! If it saves time that you can spend writing then it can’t be a bad thing, right?)

Smashwords have a FREE downloadable formatting guide which you can grab here

Tip: Don’t put any links to Amazon in the ebook version that you upload to Smashwords (e.g links to other works) – ibooks will reject you and you’ll have to start the distribution process all over again – I learnt this one by experience πŸ˜‰

4. Give out Advanced Reader Copies

I can’t impress upon you enough to do this! Find as many people as you can to give your book to in exchange for HONEST reviews (seriously, don’t go buying people off fore reviews this is not cool AND will get your book kicked so far off of Amazon that you’ll never see the light of ebook again if they find you out!!!). You can set up a Goodreads page pre-publication so they have somewhere to post their reviews before your work goes on sale.

How do you find ARC readers I hear you ask?

Well, one way is to ask friends to read your novel and give their honest opinions (don’t ask family members because Amazon won’t allow any reviews on your book who have the same surname etc.I’m sorry it doesn’t matter if Aunt Bessy thought your novel was a modern day masterpiece! She simply can’t have her say online. Sorry Aunt B).

The most effective way is to get blogging and reach out to fans who do this sort of thing in their sleep (literally…some of these awesome bloggers are like machines devouring 10 books before their breakfast!)

Tip: don’t forget to contact your reviewers with your store links once your book is live so they can put their reviews on Amazon etc. for you!

Which leads me onto my next point…

5. Get blogging!

This is the number one way to get eyes on your work. If you haven’t already started blogging get off of this post and go sign up to wordpress or tumblr or something of the like and write a post about reading this post! Or just something to say hello to the world or readers and authors out there!

Okay – back? All signed up? Good!

You can pay to have a domain without the added /wordpress or /tumblr etc. So my website is simply: http://www.carolingpeckham.com

I think the wordpress one was in the region of 15.99 per year when I signed up. I thought it was worth it personally but it’s not necessary. It could be something you want to do further down the line when people start googling your name πŸ˜‰

6. Click Publish!

If you’re publishing with Amazon KDP you’ll need to have an Amazon account. You can create one with them here otherwise just sign in with your existing one. You’ll need to go through a series of steps where you enter your bank details so you can get paid and you’ll also have to give tax information. When that’s all done you can ‘create a new title’.

Tip: Pick your keywords carefully. Think about what categories your work fits into and try to choose keywords that will help you rank well in those categories. Amazon have a whole page of information on this here including links to keywords and what categories they will assign you to.

If you’re not publishing with Amazon then the same rules apply for Smashwords. You can choose up to ten keywords but they won’t give you any advice on which ones rank you where. The best thing to do here is to use Amazon’s keywords as a guide seeing as they probably know what they’re talking about when it comes to what buyers search for.

7. Write your next book

Not what you were expecting? Well, I promise you that promoting the hell out of your first book is a fairly futile exercise. You may get lucky and strike big with your first work but this is not the way it works for 99% of us!

If you’re book isn’t part of a series then, as an indie author, I suggest you reconsider…

The best way to get noticed is to get more work out there. Consistency is key! If you can release a new piece of work every 2 – 3 months you will increase the amount of eyes on your name simply by having several books dotted around the ebook stores. Also, your budding fanbase will get used to you bringing out new books regularly and so you will stay in the back of their mind for longer.

8. Promote, promote, promote!

This bit is hard and long and neverending and I can’t say I’ve figured out the best ways for sure myself (I’m fairly certain it’s a combination of many tactics + a little trial and error + a dash of luck).

Once you’ve got 2 or 3 pieces of work floating around in the ebook world it’s time to get promoting. There are a thousand different ways that other authors swear by but this is my tactic…

Permafree with book 1 – BOOM my downloads skyrocketed when I went free with the first book in my series and now I’m reaping the rewards of followup sales on my subsequent books.

This isn’t as simple as going free then sitting back and looking smug with a cigar, you need to work at keeping your free book ranking in the top 100 of your best category. This is done by placing ads with promotion sites for free books (to name a few I like:Β  ebookhounds, booksbutterfly, sweetfreebooks, readcheaply and the mother of all ebook promos which I haven’t yet managed to score…Bookbub)

Some people swear by Facebook advertising or Goodreads ads but I’ve had little to no success with these personally (perhaps it’s a genre thing? I write fantasy btw)

Good luck guys!

I’m off on holiday soon – can you recommend me so YA books?

So I’m off to the land down under this Sunday! I’m very excited to see my best friend who I haven’t seen (bar endless hours of facetime….) in TWO YEARS! I think I’m going to have an emotional breakdown when I see her at the airport on the other side of the 22 hour flight!

I’ll be there for a few weeks and will be heading up the east coast for sun, sand and sailing! I can’t wait!

Today I’m stocking up my kindleΒ and wanted some recommendations –Β so here’s what I fancy at the moment:..

My preference is YA but if there’s something you really can’t help but tell people about I’d love to hear your suggestion!

I love a good adventure but am maybe fancying a touch of romance too at the moment so either would be great (or a book with both would be even better!)

I’m leaning a little towards fantasy but my eye has been caught by the odd sci fi/dystopia at the moment.

I’m potentially interested in reading the following so aΒ recommendation/warningΒ on any of these would be great:

My Life in Books Tag

A massive thank you to Aura Willow for nominating me for this fun tag1 Please take a moment to check out her amaaaaazing blog here.

So here is my life in books!

1. Find a book for each of your initials.

Caroline….C for City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

I loved this series and am so excited for the tv series that’s currently being made!

City_of_Bones

Peckham….P for Potter! AKA….Harry Potter…

Okay a bit of a cheat but I don’t have any books on my shelf beginning with P!

harry-potter-books

2. Count your age along your book shelf.

I’m 25 so here goes………………………………Spellfall!

51KNPBB703L__SY344_BO1,204,203,200_

This is one of those books IΒ absolutely ADORED as a kid. It was the sort of book I’d pick up if I was feeling low and get lost in for a day. I’ll never part with it or any of the Katherine Roberts books I ownΒ (including the one I got personally signed from her when I won a competition!!)

Β

3. Pick a book in your city/state/country.

I’m gonna go for Surviving the Evacuation, Book One: London by Frank Tayell (I live on the outskirts of London so I think I can just about get away with this one especially as I know many of the places in the book!)

18655852

This is an exciting book which I’d recommend for zombie lovers. It also has an interesting twist as the main character begins the story housebound with a broken leg so is unable to evacuate with the rest of the country. He also has connections with the government and the story is interwoven with a possible conspiracy which gives it more depth than just zombie-driven action!

Β

4. Pick a book that represents a destination you would love to travel to.

Jurassic Park!!!!

7653482

Call me crazy but I want to visit Jurassic Park (or World as it’s now open tehe). I know, I know everyone always end up at best running for the hills or at worst eaten by a dinosaur which is then eaten by another dinosaur…

But! I still wanna go and if this place ever opened I’d be at the front of the queue. Okay so I might have a baseball bat and a helmet on but I’d be there…..

5. Pick a book that is your favourite colour.

I have two favourite colours (pink and blue) so I’m gonan choose blue and go for Never Never by Colleen Hoover and Tarryn Fisher

24378015

I loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee these books and cannot wait for the third part to come out. They are so easy to read and you simply can’t put them down!

Β

6. Which book do you have the fondest memories of?

I hate to say Harry Potter but it’s just the truth! I think so many people will feel the same because we all grew up with these books. I used to queue up at the supermarket at midnight to get the latest instalment and I miss being able to do that these days! I do still get super excited about new books in a series coming out but as they are delivered to my kindle on a preorder it’s not quite the same……

Β

7. Which book did you have the most difficulty reading?

Allegiant

divergent-book-3-allegiant-uk-cover-1jt5kf0

I loved the first Divergent book but by the third one I found I was pushing myself through them. And, I hate to say it but once Four’s P.O.V was added in Allegiant…..I guessed why….and it was a long slog to the end to know what was coming…..

Β

8. Which book in your TBR pile will give you the biggest sense of accomplishment when you finish it?

I think I’d have to say the Game of Thrones series. I’ve not yet started it but, once I begin, it’s gonna be a mission to reach the end!

That’s it! I hoped you enjoyed it!

ARCs for Honest Reviews! Creeping Shadow – A YA Fantasy

So I’m releasing my baby to the world at last! Two years and a lot of hardwork, sweat and tears have got me here and now I’m looking for reviews on Goodreads and (when the time comes) Amazon! ☺️

So if you love YA fantasy and would like to read and review Creeping Shadow (The Rise of Isaac, #1) before anyone else please comment below with your email address and prefered file format (epub / pdf) or email me directly at caroline_peckham@hotmail.co.uk

Creeping Shadow will be released 10th December 2015 on Amazon Kindle.

Here’s the cover and blurb:

A man waits in Vale, a world void of humanity.

A mother vanishes, her disappearance concealed by the police.

A girl collapses, black magic invading her blood.

And a boy linked to them all must fight to save his family.

Earth is just one of seven worlds. Gateways divide the realms and those who pass through must earn keys, participating in challenges that will separate the fearful from the brave, the weak from the strong, and the witless from the cunning.

Sixteen year old Oliver Knight knows nothing of the other worlds or his family’s dark past. But when his adopted sister succumbs to a deadly curse the truth is revealed and he is plunged into an unknown land in a desperate bid to save her. However, a sinister enemy is on the rise and the danger they face at every turn throws those around them under suspicion. In order to survive, Oliver must figure out who to trust, who to believe and, ultimately, who to fear…

Twilight Reimagined….W…T…F…

Have you heard? Stephanie Meyer has written a 400 page reimagining of Twilight where Bella is a boy (Beau) and Jacob (Julie) and Edward (Edythe) are girls as part of the 10th anniversary edition. I don’t know whether to be crazy excited or a little weirded out…what I do know is, is that this picture is amazing….πŸ˜‚

Book Characters that the Movies Got So Wrong or So Right

I don’t know about you but I just LOVE seeing movie adapatations of books that I’ve read. But one major thing that makes or breaks the film for me is if they got the cast right for the characters…

City of Bones:

Right: Clary

I think they got Clary perfect with Lily Collins! I was over the moon but then……then I saw Jace…

Wrong: Jace

This meme just sums it up for me! I actually genuinely wanted Alex Pettyfer (top) to play Jace he was the first actor that sprang to mind when I heard it was going to be a film. But no…..they cast Jamie Campbell Bower…

And the biggest joke of all is that Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower are a genuine couple! Maybe I’m not seeing the attraction here? But I’m pretty sure she’s out of his league…

Maze Runner (Scorch Trials):

Right: Minho and Thomas

In my eyes these two guys were cast to perfection! And in all honestly I fancy them both just a little 😍

Wrong: Brenda

I was so excited about finding out who was gonna be cast as Brenda. Rosa Salazar just didn’t look right to me. My suggestion would have been Alexandra Daddario from Percy Jackson but that’s just me…

Divergent:

Right: Tris

I wasn’t completely sold on Shailene Woodley but when I saw her in the film I think she really pulled it off!

Wrong: Christina

Christina was all wrong lookswise I would personally have chosen Karidja TourΓ© from Girlhood…

Fifty Shades of Grey

Right: Christian Grey

I loved Jamie Dornan in The Fall and when I heard he was playing Christian Grey I was thrilled! He played a sexually charged psychopath in The Fall so….you do the maths – okay so maybe his northern irish accent slipped through occassionally but was anyone really focusing on his -ahem- accent

Wrong: Anastasia Steele

Dakota Johnson was just all wrong for me BUT she won me over because of her seriiouuss bravery in this role. I mean, how many girls would get butt naked for that amount of time knowing full well everyone you went to school with is gonna be sitting in the frint row on release day. πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»

I would have chosen someone like….

Considering that Fifty Shades was originally Twilight fanfiction and the fact that Kristen Stewart was the perfect Bella in my eyees (though I’m not generally a fan of her outside of Twilight….). I don’t think she should have done it but someone closer to her looks would have been right for Anastasia.

Harry Potter

Right: Snape

I think they got a lot of characters right in Harry Potter including the main three but could any of them have walked straight out of the book and into the film like Snape did? There wasn’t a single greasy strand of hair on his head that was wrong

Wrong: Ginny

Ginny was so wrong and I think it was because they cast her so early and they didn’t know the part she was gonna play in the end…could they have recast her? Probably. But did they? Not even a little…

Here’s my choice Rachel Hurd Wood from Peter Pan
