Do You Have A Muse?

The idea of muses comes from Greek mythology. I think it’s a fascinating idea and I often call my cat my muse hehe though I don’t actually believe in it! But it got me wanting to know a bit more about the notion so here’s a little info…

The Muses are the nine daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne [Memory]. Zeus came to Mnemosyne on nine consecutive nights and the nine daughters were the result of those nine unions. Mnemosyne gave birth to the nine girls near the topmost peaks of Mount Olympos (Olympus). All nine girls are of one mind … they are free spirited and have their hearts set upon song … they sing of the laws of the Immortals and the goodly ways of a life. Their homes and bright dancing places are on Mount Olympos but they may appear to anyone as long as the performer is paying tribute to the immortal gods with their art.

According to the poet Hesiod, the Muses frequent Mount Helikon (Helicon) in Boeotia and an area around Mount Olympos known as Pieria. They arise by night and shrouded in mist, walk the hills and bathe in springs. By calling upon and receiving the blessings of the Muses, a poet or dancer or musician can transcend the normal bounds of talent and rise to unimagined levels of creative insight.

The nine Muses are listed by name in the poem Theogony but the specific attributes of each goddess were added by later poets:
Erato [Lovely], Love Poems

Euterpe [Delightful], Flute Playing

Kalliope (Calliope) [the Beautiful-Voiced], Epic Poetry

Kleio (Cleio) [Celebrate], History

Melpomene [Songstress], Tragedy

Ourania (Urania) [Heavenly One], Astrology

Polymnia (Polyhymnia) [Many Hymns], Sacred Music

Terpsichore [Dance-Enjoying], Dance

Thaleia [Blooming One], Comedy

So how about you? Do you have a muse? And if not what do you wish your muse could be?

A True Quote

Reading2

Everyone sees the world differently and I think it’s so important to be understanding of other people’s opinions. Even if someone completely disagrees on, say, your favourite book it’s hard not be annoyed when it’s something you are passionate about. But, as Cinderella says:
b011c45be5b0a03d67dbaa964e0791b4

Everyone is looking for different things in books and even two people who love the same book may love it for completely different reasons! But if we all loved and hated the same things equally the world would be a very boring place indeed…

One Month Today Until Creeping Shadow is Released!!!

img_0702

In one month’s time exactly I will be releasing Creeping Shadow to the world! I’m so excited!

Check it out here on Goodreads where you can read reviews and check out the ratings from those who have received advanced reader copies!

Here’s the blurb:

A man waits in Vale, a world void of humanity.
A mother vanishes, her disappearance concealed by the police.
A girl collapses, black magic invading her blood.
And a boy linked to them all must fight to save his family.

Earth is just one of seven worlds. Gateways divide the realms and those who pass through must earn keys, participating in challenges that will separate the fearful from the brave, the weak from the strong, and the witless from the cunning.

Sixteen year old Oliver Knight knows nothing of the other worlds or his family’s dark past. But when his adopted sister succumbs to a deadly curse the truth is revealed and he is plunged into an unknown land in a desperate bid to save her. However, a sinister enemy is on the rise and the danger they face at every turn throws those around them under suspicion. In order to survive, Oliver must figure out who to trust, who to believe and, ultimately, who to fear…

Happy Halloween!! Here’s to Goosebumps and R.L Stine…

Firstly, I just wanted to say that the cover photo for this post is possibly one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen haha!

But moving swiftly on…

In honour of the scariest day of the year I thought I’d talk about Goosebumps and the new movie (starring Jack Black) that will be out early next year…

goosebumps-142928

I LOVED Goosebumps as a kid. I used to have all the books which I read repeatedly so the spines were completely destroyed!

I also watched the TV show after school and to this day I can still remember the opening credits vividly!

R.L Stine is an inspiration to anyone who writes children’s books. He had a way of making his stories the perfect amount of frightening which brought this fascination to the reader who just had to read the next story and the next and the next.

The main character in the movie (played by Jack Black) is R.L Stine which I think is fantastic! The premise is that the scary creatures from his books start appearing in his own life and he has to face the demons he has created! It looks brilliant and I think Jack Black is the perfect choice to make this film a mixture of fun and frightening.

So here’s my question to you…which Goosebumps book scared you most?

For me it was this one…

To this day dummies still freak me out!

Have a spoooooooky day!

Harry Potter And The Cursed Child…Anyone else super excited?!!

J.K Rowling has written a stage show! And I am sooooo excited about this!

Here’s the description from the website:

Based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, a new play by Jack Thorne will receive its world premiere in London’s West End at the Palace Theatre in the summer of 2016.

Featuring a cast of over 30, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the eighth story in the Harry Potter series and the first official Harry Potter story to be presented on stage. Written by Jack Thorne and directed by Olivier and Tony award winner John Tiffany, the play brings together some of the most exciting talent working in the theatre today.

It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children.

While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will be directed by John Tiffany with movement by Steven Hoggett, set designs by Christine Jones, costumes by Katrina Lindsay, music by Imogen Heap, lighting by Neil Austin, sound by Gareth Fry, special effects by Jeremy Chernick, illusions by Jamie Harrison and musical supervision by Martin Lowe.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, Colin Callender‘s Playground Entertainment and Harry Potter Theatrical Productions.

Casting hasn’t yet been announced but come on who isn’t hoping they’ve brought back Daniel Radcliff? I mean, I would be running to the theatre to queue for it literally now – and yeah it’s not even gonna be out until Summer 2016 so that’s how long I’d camp outside for it…..

The world Premiere is 30th July 2016 but preview tickets are going on sale from 30th October so if you want a ticket you better sign up now for priority booking!! I’m certainly going to!

I’m off on holiday soon – can you recommend me so YA books?

So I’m off to the land down under this Sunday! I’m very excited to see my best friend who I haven’t seen (bar endless hours of facetime….) in TWO YEARS! I think I’m going to have an emotional breakdown when I see her at the airport on the other side of the 22 hour flight!

I’ll be there for a few weeks and will be heading up the east coast for sun, sand and sailing! I can’t wait!

Today I’m stocking up my kindle and wanted some recommendations – so here’s what I fancy at the moment:..

My preference is YA but if there’s something you really can’t help but tell people about I’d love to hear your suggestion!

I love a good adventure but am maybe fancying a touch of romance too at the moment so either would be great (or a book with both would be even better!)

I’m leaning a little towards fantasy but my eye has been caught by the odd sci fi/dystopia at the moment.

I’m potentially interested in reading the following so a recommendation/warning on any of these would be great:

My Life in Books Tag

A massive thank you to Aura Willow for nominating me for this fun tag1 Please take a moment to check out her amaaaaazing blog here.

So here is my life in books!

1. Find a book for each of your initials.

Caroline….C for City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

I loved this series and am so excited for the tv series that’s currently being made!

City_of_Bones

Peckham….P for Potter! AKA….Harry Potter…

Okay a bit of a cheat but I don’t have any books on my shelf beginning with P!

2. Count your age along your book shelf.

I’m 25 so here goes………………………………Spellfall!

51KNPBB703L__SY344_BO1,204,203,200_

This is one of those books I absolutely ADORED as a kid. It was the sort of book I’d pick up if I was feeling low and get lost in for a day. I’ll never part with it or any of the Katherine Roberts books I own (including the one I got personally signed from her when I won a competition!!)

3. Pick a book in your city/state/country.

I’m gonna go for Surviving the Evacuation, Book One: London by Frank Tayell (I live on the outskirts of London so I think I can just about get away with this one especially as I know many of the places in the book!)

18655852

This is an exciting book which I’d recommend for zombie lovers. It also has an interesting twist as the main character begins the story housebound with a broken leg so is unable to evacuate with the rest of the country. He also has connections with the government and the story is interwoven with a possible conspiracy which gives it more depth than just zombie-driven action!

4. Pick a book that represents a destination you would love to travel to.

Jurassic Park!!!!

7653482

Call me crazy but I want to visit Jurassic Park (or World as it’s now open tehe). I know, I know everyone always end up at best running for the hills or at worst eaten by a dinosaur which is then eaten by another dinosaur…

But! I still wanna go and if this place ever opened I’d be at the front of the queue. Okay so I might have a baseball bat and a helmet on but I’d be there…..

5. Pick a book that is your favourite colour.

I have two favourite colours (pink and blue) so I’m gonan choose blue and go for Never Never by Colleen Hoover and Tarryn Fisher

24378015

I loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee these books and cannot wait for the third part to come out. They are so easy to read and you simply can’t put them down!

6. Which book do you have the fondest memories of?

I hate to say Harry Potter but it’s just the truth! I think so many people will feel the same because we all grew up with these books. I used to queue up at the supermarket at midnight to get the latest instalment and I miss being able to do that these days! I do still get super excited about new books in a series coming out but as they are delivered to my kindle on a preorder it’s not quite the same……

7. Which book did you have the most difficulty reading?

Allegiant

divergent-book-3-allegiant-uk-cover-1jt5kf0

I loved the first Divergent book but by the third one I found I was pushing myself through them. And, I hate to say it but once Four’s P.O.V was added in Allegiant…..I guessed why….and it was a long slog to the end to know what was coming…..

8. Which book in your TBR pile will give you the biggest sense of accomplishment when you finish it?

I think I’d have to say the Game of Thrones series. I’ve not yet started it but, once I begin, it’s gonna be a mission to reach the end!

That’s it! I hoped you enjoyed it!
